Prof Waters said: 'My sister invited Ofsted in - she volunteered the school because she thought it would be useful for their school improvement work. Professor Waters, told BBC Radio 4's Today programme, her sister had invited Ofsted to inspect her school in 2019 and chief inspector Amanda Spielman had visited. 'Even unburdening herself was a burden because she was so terrified that she would lose her job - lose her school which she had loved and led for 16 years.' 'She told me, her sister, because she told me everything, but it was always couched in this dreadful 'Don't tell anyone - I'll lose my job if I get found out'. 'It (the draft report) says categorically that teachers must not share that information and that Ofsted would consider it a serious breach of confidentiality and take appropriate action. She didn't last three months - she lasted 54 days with that knowledge'. Her heartbroken sister said the inspection had been the 'worst day of her life' for Ruth, adding: 'Nothing she has said would have helped my sister. It includes speeding up reinspections to between one and three months for schools such as Ms Perry's where they were failed because of safeguarding concerns.īut Ms Perry's sister, Professor Julia Waters, said the changes were 'a start' but do not 'adequately address the many problems that the system creates' after listening to Ms Spielman justify it on Radio 4 this morning. Ofsted has unveiled changes to the system to pacify unions and school bosses who called for it to be revamped or scrapped. Speaking today Ofsted chief inspector Amanda Spielman insisted they should not be scrapped, claiming that the 'whole school accountability system' is built around single-word ratings ranging from outstanding to inadequate. Ms Perry, headteacher at Caversham Primary School in Reading, took her life in January while waiting for an Ofsted report that downgraded her school to 'inadequate' – the lowest possible rating. Ofsted's chief inspector has insisted that scrapping one-word inspection ratings 'wouldn't solve underlying discomfort' for headteachers in failing schools following the suicide of Ruth Perry, whose sister has expressed her disgust today.
